Yes, I know there is no J in change. What you know is there is impact that change has on an organization. When the impact that this change has on productivity and thus possible revenues is acknowledged and taken in to account the fears about what will happen can be minimized. This impact is The Dip in the J.
What happens is that you’ve spent time planning and getting ready and then you begin to implement and guess what happens? Things begin to fall apart, productivity falls off, and everyone feels unsettled – this is The Dip. After a period of time things start to improve as everyone becomes more comfortable with the changes that have taken place and impact those changes have on their job. Once that happens momentum begins to build and productivity starts to increase.
What usually happens is The Dip comes along and no one was prepared for it. Then someone says “this isn’t working, we’re worse off than we were before” this then slows everything down causing even more turmoil.
Do yourself and your employees a big favor, be prepared for The Dip and also be prepared for the upward momentum.
