As leaders we sometimes forget that it’s not all about us. “We are the leader, we know where we are going. Just follow me and I’ll get us there.”
It’s not about you!
It’s not about what you want!
It’s about what the team needs to get to where you want to go!
Yes, you define where you want to go.
But when you let those who can take you there help define how to get there, and then do your part to support them and provide them what they need to get you there, you will get them there so much faster.
So think back a minute! Who do you want to follow? Someone who leads looking forward without even a glance back to see if everyone is following? Or someone who looks back once in a while to ensure that everyone is following and who takes the time to find out why the stragglers are struggling?
The leaders who have dedicated followers take the time to share the goal (where are you headed), ensure everyone knows what the plan is and that they are fully equipped.
Make sure you spend time learning what your team needs to help you get where you’re going. You will get there so much faster when you support and encourage them rather than try to drag them along with you.
Focus on your team instead of focusing on you and then they will help you reach your goals!
