034How do we innovate?  How do we think outside of the box?  Ideas are the life blood of growing organizations or new organizations, but what ideas and how do we get there?

In order to be receptive to ideas you must be open to the idea that either you can come up with new ideas or that you can hire those who will come up with new ideas.

New ideas are scary though.  They might take you to someplace you don’t want to go.  They might not work. They might work.  For many people there is too much unknown in new ideas.  They’d rather play it safe than step out of their box.

Everything we have today is because someone said yes to a new idea, said, “I don’t care”  to the possibility that it won’t work. Said, “I’ll learn something” in the face of it not turning out the way they thought it would.  Said, “I’ll change this and try again.” This is how we innovate.

Do you innovate? Look at your organization, is this attitude and behavior encouraged or discouraged?  How do you know?  Look at the results.  You can say you’re an innovative company but if your culture doesn’t support innovation then you can say what you want.

Innovation is messy and can be scary.  It’s also fun and exhilarating.
