026This morning after I finished running I had a personal insight into persistent and consistent. I’m getting ready to run a ½ marathon in about 4 months.  I’m not a runner, though I’m fairly athletic and today I realized that I need to be consistent not just persistent.

I’m persistent in that I keep trying.  I’ve researched different running programs, I worked with a running coach (twice), I plan runs with my daughter, I’ve tried running with two of our dogs and then with one of the dogs. I’ve tried running early morning and late morning.  You name it I’m willing to try it.

And still I’m frustrated because I’m not increasing my distance and my breathing isn’t getting better. All of which is causing me to wonder if I can really do this.  Then this morning it hit me.  I’m persistent but I haven’t been consistent.  Sure I have lots of good reasons. But the fact of the matter is I’m not consistently running 4 times a week like I know I need to be.

Yes persistence is important. That’s how you find out what works best for you, by trying different ways of doing something.  But once you find something the works good enough then it’s time to focus on consistency.  Consistency is doing it regularly until you’ve reached your goal.

Where in your business are you persistently looking for the right thing when what you already have is good enough and it’s time to consistently take the actions required to reach your goal?
