When we talk about Healthy Organizations we are not just talking about the soft side of an organization, you know – those subjects such as good communication, high moral levels and good customer relations.
A Healthy Organization is one in which all parts of the organization are functioning to their max potential, based on their relationship to the whole organization, not to the detriment of another area of the organization. A Healthy Organization is also one in which there is a clear focus on its long term sustainability.
For example, this means that financial decisions are made while also considering how to have the least impact on employees and customers. Or employee decisions are made within the framework of how they will impact other parts of the organization.
Just as an athlete needs to have a healthy body in order to be a top notch athlete, there are times when sacrifices in one area need to be made to reach the desired goal, and then once the goal is reached a rebalancing is done to bring the whole body back into alignment prior to reaching for a new goal.
This reaching for a goal and then rebalancing is important in organizations also. When a goal is shared and embraced by the whole organization there is then an energy and willingness to make the necessary adjustments that are required to meet the goal. Once the goal is reached the organization needs to pause, catch their breath and celebrate before going on to the next goal.
