I don’t trust what you say. I trust what you do.
No matter how much we say trust us, unless we behave in a trust worthy way, others won’t trust us, actually we don’t even trust ourselves.
Think about it. When you tell yourself you’re going to do something, how often do you find your mind responding back with a silent “Oh yeah” or “yeah right” tinged in doubt?
In business this happens way too often. CEOs and leaders say things such as, we value trust and then you turn around and read in the paper that they’ve been convicted of fraud. Or we value our customers and then put policies and procedures in place that are anything but customer centric.
“Not me you say, I’m not like that.” I’m sure you’re not. What I’d like for you to do is think about the last time you said one thing and did another. Sometimes, often times, it’s not done on purpose, it’s done because it’s convenient, or maybe you thought it’s not a big deal.
The truth is it is a big deal. Someday, something is going to happen to you and you’re going to find yourself saying “You can’t trust what that person says. They’ll do something else every time.”
When that happens, look at yourself and see where you’re doing the same thing. And even better, be truthful and honest in all your actions and you’ll be trusted.
And you know what’s great about being trusted? You can make big requests and push people hard and they’ll trust you and support you.
