There is a tendency for us to like others who are like us. While there is nothing wrong with that, it does have a tendency to narrow our thinking and our behaviors. We keep doing more of what we like and what our friends and associates like and soon we find we’re stuck in a rut. This same rut happens in businesses when the same individuals make hiring decisions, you go to the same schools to hire interns and you take referrals from the same people. And all of a sudden you have a company of Me’s.
While that may be comforting it can back fire because the more you hire people who act and think like you the more challenging it is to think and do in new and creative ways.
So the next time you’re ready to hire someone see if you can look in a new place. If you always go to large colleges try looking in at a small college. If you normally hire certain staff from similar companies or industries, look at a different industry.
Hiring employees who are different from your current employees can be a challenge, especially if not handled right. The good thing is they can also challenge and stretch you, and when this happens, if you’re open to it, you and your company will grow and change too.
