012It’s Tuesday morning and you’re reading my blog article just like you do every Tuesday morning.  As you read this morning’s blog post I’d like you to reflect on how unique you are and how no one can do what you’re doing the way that you’re doing it.

While we are all very similar in many respects, we all have that unique combination of characteristics that set us apart. I want to encourage you to spend some time really getting clear about what that combination is for you.  If you’re at all like me you probably look at others whom you consider more successful and wonder why you aren’t as successful as they are.

Here are a couple of things I’ve learned as I’ve studied, watched and talked with other leaders.

  1. If we’re not as successful as we want to be we’re not playing to our strengths and unique combination of characteristics.
  2. If we’re afraid (shh – don’t tell anyone I said this) it’s because we think we have to do it all ourselves.
  3. No one has ever really accomplished anything all by themselves. We have all learned from others.

I’m sure you’ve heard the story about trying to teach frogs to fly, rabbits to swim and fish to run.  Are you doing that to yourself and others around you?  Focus on what you love and practice letting go of the other things.  Do what you are good at and surround yourself with others who are good at the other things.  If you can swim, practice swimming faster, don’t worry about flying higher.

Remember when you were a child and you ran with freedom and joy just because you could?  Remember getting lost in time because you were doing something that so absorbed all of you that you lost track of time?  I know there are times where you still experience that.   Successful people experience it on a regular basis.  Pay attention to what you’re doing when time stands still and bring more of that into your life.
