I was at an event today where Gary Auerbach of Play.Nice was presenting his business and the challenge he’s having sharing the results and the value
will receive from what he does. I personally was very inspired by one of the exercises he had us do.
In order to share what he does he handed out peacock feathers and after showing us the beautiful plume and the pointy end of the feather he asked us to balance the pointy end on our finger. When doing this if you stand still and stiff the feather will fall to the ground. Yet if you keep your eye on the beautiful plume while balancing the end on your finger and then moving your hand back and forth you would be able to balance the feather for quite some time. The more focused you are, and the more carefully and quickly you responded to the feathers movement the longer you can keep the feather balanced. If you keep your head down and try to watch your hand the feather falls onto the ground.
What I realized is that this is what we need to do as business owners and leaders. We need to remain focused on what we are trying to create while continually adjusting what we are doing to ensure that we are creating what we want to build. As you keep your focus on the big picture, the vision and mission of your business, the ebb and flow of what needs to be done will be sorted out, because you’ll be paying attention and asking yourself is this where I need to go or what I need to do? And as you do that and look for the answers, while continuously making minor adjustment you’ll keep the feather in the air. Opps I mean your business!
Jane, I love this article. This really stimulated my imagination. Thanks! L
