If you don’t, then you need some clarity. Clarity is one of three keys to moving forward. When planning a trip you need to know where you are going. When building a business you need to know where you are going.
Think about what you are trying to create. How is what you’re creating going to make the world a better place? This is your vision. Once you know what you’re creating, you need to know what you are doing to make that happen. What you are doing is your mission.
What are your goals for next year? Your goals provide you with the guidelines for how big or small you want to be and how much you want to do next year as you implement your mission and move towards your vision.
Now that you know where you’re going and what you’re doing, you want to ask yourself how do I want to do this, what values are important to me and this business I’m building. These values help create the culture of the organization that is going to help you grow your business.
There you have it – to have clarity you need to know what you’re trying to do, how you’re going to do it, how big it should be and the type of experience you want to have as you take this trip. This is clarity in a nutshell, knowing what you want to create so you can share it with others, invite them along and most important know when you get off course. Very simple; just not always easy.

I can’t believe, Jane, that it’s time ~ almost past time ~ to have goals set for the New Year!!! Thanks for the reminder. And you are right … the definition in a nutshell is simple but for so very many people it’s one of the hardest elements in their businesses and, indeed, in life!!!!
Hi Jane! From 2010-2012, I have stumbled all over the place and it is due to having a lack of clarity. Not only was I confusing myself, I was confusing those around me – even my BNI group couldn’t refer me out because they didn’t know what I was offering from week to week. Since September 2012, I regained my clarity and my business has shot off like a rocket. You are absolutely right! Thanks! Janet
So true. I saw this in all my years in corporate that the leaders were not thinking this way. There was no vision, no goals. I can’t imagine running my business without a clear vision. I think having a vision is a way to avoid burnout. And boy does it give you more energy. Probably because you’re not running around in circles.
Simple but not easy! You said it! Yet so important to know where you want to go first, then make a plan to get there. The old roadmap to the destination.
Recently I’ve realized my destination isn’t as clear as it needs to be, so I’m working on that. Thanks for the simple steps.
Thanks so much Jane! I realised that I’ve been a bit out of touch with where I’m going of late, but thanks for helping me rein that back in!
I think planning is relevant to most procedures in life. Planning helps us be prepared for what we want and allows us flexibility for the challenges that pop up inadvertently! This is doubly important this time of year as we prepare for the year ahead!
