What’s keeping you from doing the things that you say you want to do? It’s easy to say I’m procrastinating or I have more important things to do. For most of us, though what’s really keeping us stuck are our old limiting beliefs. Often times we’re not even conscious of what limiting beliefs are stopping us cold in our tracks.
It can seem like we’re bored, tired or event that we have something more important to do. How many times have you found yourself googling something or posting something on Facebook and then two hours later coming back to reality? I’ll find this happening to me when I have something to write or especially phone calls to make.
I know I’m committed to growing my business and I imagine you’re committed to growing yours. So what’s behind that lack of action? It’s simple just not easy! Your limiting beliefs. Some of which you might be aware of and some that you’re probably not even aware of. The common ones especially for women entrepreneurs (and really all women) are:
- I’m not worthy
- I’m not good enough
- I don’t deserve this
Now you may have other ones and also often times these beliefs are covering up other beliefs. I also realize there is a tendency for us to want to “think positive thoughts” and pretend that we don’t have this negative self talk going on in our head.
Most of these beliefs took root in our unconscious before the age of 5, which is one of the reasons they can be such a challenge to identify. Before age 5 we absorbed ideas and in many cases we didn’t even have the language to identify what they were, they just were. This is why we can find ourselves doing things and wonder why we’re behaving that way.
So what can you do? There are a variety of different tools that can help us identify our limiting beliefs and let go of them. One of the most important things to do is to be aware, just be aware of the thoughts and feelings you have when you find yourself doing something to avoid doing what you say you want to do. Once you’re aware then you have a choice. You can choose to keep doing it or you can choose to make a choice to think a different thought. We have so many thoughts that we are not aware of, that we have allowed to become habitual. It’s time to create a new habit, and new thoughts and beliefs both of which take desire, practice and time.
Some of the tools I’ve used are EFT (emotional freedom technique), journaling and reflection, talking through them with someone, working with an intuitive healer (especially for those beliefs you can’t identify) and the Unstuck Process I learned from my marketing coach Robert Middleton of Action Marketing based on Byron Katies work.
If your business is struggling and you find yourself doing the opposite of what you know you need to be doing I encourage you to look at where you’re stuck and overwhelmed.
